CWU Annual Conference Unanimously Votes For 24 Hour General Strike

History was made today at the Communications Workers Union Annual conference being held in Bournemouth this week.

Following Ed Balls Labour MP as a guest speaker who argued against the coalition government cuts being imposed upon this country, without any mandate to do so, delegate after delegate rose to the rostrum in support of the campaign against the cuts; and voted unanimously for motion 1 calling for a general strike.

The welfare cuts by the government, attacks on employment rights, the disabled and on education, and upon health and safety legislation are just some of the reasons given by delegates to support a national general strike for 24 hours.

CWU delegates followed calls earlier, last week, from the PCS Annual Conference for a general strike to beat the government's cuts programme; and follows the views expressed by many Trade union leaders, that this is the only way to defeat the coalition governments plans.

The full terms of the motion to CWU Conference and passed unanimously by the 800 or so delegates attending, can be read in the pic above.
